Our RE Offer at St Matthew’s C of E Primary School 
At St Matthew’s, Religious Education (RE) is given a high priority within the curriculum.  The RE curriculum promotes respect for diverse world views and plays a crucial role in nurturing the holistic development of pupils.  It enables all pupils to develop and encourages them to be thoughtful, compassionate, and active global citizens  of society in line with our vision: ‘Let your light shine’ and our BRIGHT values. 

Our Teaching Approach  

At St Matthews’s C of E Primary School, we teach RE using the London Diocesan Board for School’s (LDBS) plans and follow the model curriculum map.  Plans are structured around ‘Big Questions’.  Children consider the Bible’s core concepts, develop religious literacy and experience a broad and balanced curriculum as they learn what people believe (theology), think (philosophy), and how they live and respond (human/social science) because of this.  

Oracy in RE: Children have regular opportunities to talk about their experiences; express their opinions and to make comparisons between different religions. Children are encouraged to use sentence stems to explain their thinking and to reason effectively, developing both confidence and clarity in their communication.   

Inclusive Practice: As an inclusive school, we meet the needs of all our learners through paired and group work, open-ended tasks, exploration and experimentation, along with constructive feedback from adults and peers.  Teachers are adaptive in their questioning in order to allow all children to share their ideas. We encourage children to build on each other’s answers so they all have a voice and to ‘Say it again better’ (WalkThrus) so that teachers can scaffold a deeper understanding of concepts.  Learning about other religions and global world views is an essential part of our aim to develop respectful global citizens and helps ensure that all children feel included.
