     Our Music Offer at St Matthew’s C of E Primary School 

At St Matthew’s C of E Primary School, we are committed to delivering a high-quality, creative and inclusive music education. This enables children to develop confidence whilst developing musical skills and an appreciation of the musical world.  

Our Teaching Approach:  At St Matthews’s C of E Primary School, music is taught by a specialist music teacher.   We follow the Sing Up! Curriculum, which is aligned with the National Plan for Music and National Curriculum standards and requirements.  Children are encouraged to sing on a regular basis and also explore a range of percussion instruments.  As part of our curriculum, there are whole-class instrumental lessons as follows:  

• Y3 - one term of Recorder lessons
• Y4 - two terms of Violin lessons, led by Enfield Music Service
• Y5 - one term of Ukulele lessons

Oracy in Music: Children have regular opportunities to express their opinions about the music they have heard or that has been created during lessons.  Children use sentence stems to explain their thinking and to reason effectively, developing both confidence and clarity in their communication.   

Inclusive Practice: We meet the needs of all our learners through paired and group work, open-ended tasks, exploration and experimentation, along with constructive feedback from adults and peers.   

Performance Opportunities: Throughout the year there are a variety of opportunities to perform to other classes and parents.  These include the EYFS Nativity; KS1 Nativity; KS2 Carol Service; Music Partnership Festivals at other local schools; Prom Praise for Schools at the Royal Albert Hall; class assemblies; Cultural Diversity Day; Year 6 end of year production; end of term services and occasional Sunday services in St Matthew’s Church.  We also have visiting musicians and performers when children have opportunities to be audience members during live performances as well as take part in music workshops with professional musicians.
